Pain in the Pines Adventure Race 2011

12-Hour Race!

Solo, 2, 3 and 4 member teams are welcome to come test their skill and endurance in this non-stop adventure race.  This is our 9th year for the Pain in the Pines Adventure race and the 9th birthday of SteelSports.net, LLC!!!!  Come celebrate with a romp in the woods!

The race will include navigation with a map and compass, but don't worry if you don't know how. We'll be glad to help, before the race!  The navigation in this race will be slightly more difficult than in our Tyler Adventure Sprint race.

Approximate Distances (finish time 8-12 hours):

  • Mountain Biking 20-30 miles;
  • Trekking 8-12 miles;
  • Paddling 3-6 miles;
  • Ropes Course;
  • Teamwork Challenges

Race fees include:

  • Race entry,
  • Park entry,
  • Maps -- extra maps available. 
  • T-shirt or Cap (if you meet pre-reg deadline) and swag;
  • Post-race food for racers;

Pain in the Pines Adventure Race is a Checkpoint Tracker Event



Your Team MUST have created a Team profile and add the Pain in the Pines Adventure Race to your Team Schedule in order to earn Checkpoint Tracker points. If you have not done this by the official Start of the race YOU WILL NOT EARN POINTS. Please visit http://www.checkpointtracker.com for more information including rules and the points schedule and to register and create your Racer and Team profile.

Schedule: 

  • Pre-race Meeting, Friday night 8:00 pm
  • Pre-race last minute details @ 7:30 am
  • Race Start 8:00 am 
  • Race Cut-off 8:00 pm

Teams lose on CP for every 5 minutes late.  A 4 minute grace period is offered.  Teams start losing CPs at 8:05 pm.  (12 hour cutoff)


Each team member should have:

  • Mountain Bike;
  • Mountain Bike helmet;
  • Red Blinkie light for back of mountain bike;
  • White light for front of mountain bike;
  • Hydration system (camelbak or just a water bottle);
  • Climbing harness, sewn runner and 2 carabiners -- teammates may share.

Teams will need:

  • 1:24k UTM Grid;
  • Compass;
  • Pen or pencil for map marking;

Paddle Section:

  • Each team needs a boat or boats;
  • Each member needs PFD (life vest) and paddle;
  • You may bring your own watercraft, but no motors;
  • You may also rent from the State Park or other places, like REI;
    - **If you plan to rent from the State park, please email me how many you need.  We will ask them to set aside a boat for you, that you can pay for before the race.**

Ropes Section:

We will have a ropes section this year.  You will need the following, but if you do not have, we will purchase a couple extra, before the race for you to use. 

  • Harness (not homemade)
  • 24" sewn lanyard
  • 2 Carabiners

Recommended Items:

  • Trail running shoes;
  • Change of clothes;
  • Light food to keep you going;
  • Blister kit;

The following teams have requested boats (pfds and paddles):

Renting from State Park for $30 each boat;

The park has 15 canoes available and 5 tandem kayaks.  Reserve through me, and pay on race day.  I will forward your cash to the State Park.  Boats will be stationed on the park's beach, so you do not have to transport.

CAMPING:

No tent camping in Blackjack area. You MAY set up your TA, if needed; however, they do not allow tent camping.  RV reservations can be made by emailing us and we will pay park directly.

For camping reservations in the park (outside of Blackjack), please contact the State Park (link above).

Teams are encouraged to register now. You may pay later, but must have money in by the pre-registration deadline to be eligible for the pre-registration discount offer.
Additionally, if the race sells out, teams that have not paid may be put on a waiting list, behind teams that have paid.

Cancellation Policy:   

Cancellations on or before Saturday, February 26, 2011 will receive 90% refund.
Cancellations after Saturday, February 26, 2011 will receive 50% refund. Cancellations (or no shows) the week of the event receive 0% refund. We have a VERY generous cancellation policy; however, we will strictly adhere to it. Racers are not officially registered, until we receive payment. No transfer credits for cancellations.
